Washington Literacy Center Names New Executive Director

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Literacy Center (WLC), one of Greater Washington’s best small charities, announced today the appointment of Jimmie L. Williams as its new executive director. Williams joins WLC as it celebrates more than 50 years of raising the literacy level of adults in the District of Columbia, and improving employment and educational opportunities for them and their families.

“Jimmie Williams is a seasoned professional with years of experience in both the public and private sectors, and a core ability to manage projects and build relationships,” said WLC’s Board Chair Peggy Sulvetta. “He brings particular strengths in strategic communications, operational efficiency and fundraising, and we look forward to working with him on WLC’s vital mission.”

“I am focusing on strategic planning, development, increasing awareness and expanding our outreach to overcome the literacy challenges of DC’s adult citizens,” Williams declared. “Our students face daily obstacles in meeting their needs and those of their families. We will create new opportunities for them to pursue educational and job opportunities that enhance their quality of life and ability to contribute to their communities.

Williams formerly served as Director, Global Government and Public Affairs at McDonald’s Corporation, managing several issues including labor and workforce, healthcare, finance and banking. He also worked on global initiatives with Safe Affordable Food Everywhere (SAFE) and has covered local, state, federal and global issues. He is currently President of the Penn Branch Citizens Civic Association and serves on several organization boards, including Federation of Citizens Associations of the District of Columbia.
